I made what is almost my once-a-year trip into the centre of town last weekend and took this picture which is, perhaps, an iconic view of Brighton. But what many people don't realise until they actually visit the Royal Pavilion is that this is the back of the building. Of course, that should be obvious from the picture - there's no proper door! - but most people look at these things without seeing what is (or isn't) there. Iconic that view may be, but I much prefer something like the shot below which shows part of the front.

That's an amazing structure. Being a rube from America, I've never seen it before. How old is it? How was it constructed, and by whom? What is it's purpose? It's quite beautiful.
Jim, it was built, roughly 200 years ago, as a palace for the then Prince Regent, later King George IV. The official web site is here and Wikipedia has a lot of info as well.
